Hardware Settings for Accent SA (7 data bits & 8 data bits)

Hardware Settings for Accent SA 7 data bits

First, lets look at the back of the Accent SA synthesizer. With the synthesizers front facing you, reach to the back of the device and find the connection for the serial cable. Once you have located the connection, move slowly to the left and you will find a small area that has 8 very tiny switches. These switches are what this document is going to focus on for the proper settings for the Accent SA.
The general settings for the Accent SA to run with Jaws for Windows 3.2 should be set at a baud rate of 9600, 7-data bits, no parity, and one stop-bit.
Starting from the back of the synthesizer, the switch closest to the cable connection is switch number 1. All switches should be in the up position, except for switch 4,8 which should be in the down position.
One way to test if the synthesizer is connected to the computer and working properly is to mode the port and then echo the port with a message to see if the device speaks. The following steps show you how to do this:

Press CONTROL+ESCAPE to go to the DOS prompt
Press the letter U for the Shutdown Dialog Box
Press the letter M to choose restarting in MS DOS Mode
Press the letter Y to confirm your choice
You should be at a DOS prompt that looks similar to this: C:\WINDOWS>.
Type the following command MODE COM1 96,n,7,1 and press ENTER. This will set the mode of the port. The two devices will try to communicate.
Type the following command: ECHO HELLO. >>COM1 and press ENTER. At this point, the synthesizer should say the word hello. If it does not say hello, then try changing the number COM1 to COM2.
Type EXIT and this will restart windows.

You may also want to try the same procedures in an MS DOS Window.
